The Daniel Boone Homestead is an historic site located in Berks County, PA that preserves the birthplace of Daniel Boone. The property contains a historic sawmill and man-made lake created by damming the Owatin Creek. The volume of the lake has been greatly reduced by sediment deposits over the past 40 years since it was last dredged in 1970, and the reduction in water depth has impacted the recreational use of the lake and the operation of the sawmill. The objective of this project was to restore the lake and the associated infrastructure to allow the lake to serve its intended purposes. Project elements included dredging the lake to its approximate original dimensions, installing a sediment trap at the inflow to the lake, inspecting and performing maintenance and repairs on the dam and appurtenant structures, and replacing a failing pedestrian bridge across Owatin Creek at the inflow to the lake.
The Pennsylvania Department of General Services contracted with Cedarville Engineering Group LLC, who led a team consisting of Princeton Hydro, Colliers Engineering and Design Inc., and Honor Engineering Co. Princeton Hydro was responsible for performing the bathymetric survey of the lake, sediment sampling within the lake to ensure compliance with PA Clean Fill Standards, and the dredging and dredge disposal design.
