Following Hurricane Sandy, Princeton Hydro was contracted for a number of infrastructure reconstruction projects, including the reconstruction of a seawall along the Atlantic Ocean at the Harbour Mansion Condominium development in Long Branch, New Jersey. The original 10-foot-high timber bulkhead was undermined and completely destroyed as a result of the 12- to 14-foot storm surge and direct impact of ocean-born storm waves. Princeton Hydro was contracted to complete the subsurface investigation, engineering design, permitting, and construction administration services related to the new wall.
The investigation involved the progression of soil borings to a depth of 40 feet below an existing parking lot, in situ soil strength tests (soil penetration), laboratory analysis of collected soil samples, structural design of a new cantilever, steel sheet pile wall and timber piles, engineering plan preparation of the new wall and deck foundation design, and local and state permit applications. The project was designed to protect the wall from undermining during future storm surge events and withstand the force of wave impacts. The wall and timber piles were also designed to accommodate the expected beach replenishment to be completed by the US Army Corps of Engineers following the reconstruction of the wall and deck.
Princeton Hydro worked with the site civil engineer and property owners to design a wall and deck foundation system that met their expectations, all the way down to the color of the protective latex coatings for the steel sheets and timber piles. Princeton Hydro provided full time construction supervision to document the progression of work, enforce the design intent, and ensure that all work was completed in accordance with the goals and objectives of the client.
