The Borough of Florham Park and Princeton Hydro recently completed the installation of two floating wetland islands (FWIs) at Spring Garden Lake, advancing ongoing efforts to improve water quality and enhance aquatic habitat within this valued community resource.
The project was implemented as part of the Spring Garden Lake Watershed Implementation Plan, a comprehensive, science-based strategy developed to address watershed and lake health challenges developed by Princeton Hydro. As a nature-based solution, FWIs were selected for their ability to remove excess nutrients, including phosphorus and nitrogen, that can contribute to harmful algal blooms and other water quality issues.
Planted with native vegetation, the islands mimic the functions of natural wetlands. As the plants mature, their root systems extend beneath the water’s surface, helping filter pollutants, support beneficial microbial communities, and create habitat for aquatic wildlife.
Princeton Hydro’s Aquatic Ecologists planted, launched, and anchored the islands during the installation event. Protective goose fencing was installed around each island to prevent damage to young vegetation while the plantings become established. Watch the video below and take a front-row seat to installation day as the FWIs make their journey from assembly to launch:

Since 2002, Princeton Hydro has partnered with the Borough of Florham Park to support the stewardship of Spring Garden Lake through a variety of science-based lake management initiatives. The FWIs represent the latest investment in improving water quality, strengthening ecological function, and enhancing the lake’s long-term resilience. Click here to learn more about FWIs.
