One Year Later: Revisiting the Steven R. Rothman Overlook and Preserve

More than a year after opening to the public, the Steven R. Rothman Overlook and Preserve, in the heart of the Meadowlands, continues to demonstrate how ecological restoration goals and a vision for public access can be thoughtfully balanced to create a space that serves both people and wildlife.

When the 5-acre preserve officially opened in July 2025, it marked the culmination of years of conservation advocacy, planning, and collaboration. Today, visitors are welcomed by a thoughtfully designed landscape that has begun to settle into itself. Native trees and shrubs have established roots, meadow plantings have matured, and the site is functioning as the accessible gateway to the Meadowlands that it was intended to be.

Princeton Hydro provided landscape architecture, environmental, civil, and geotechnical engineering services that helped transform the site into a welcoming and accessible destination while preserving and enhancing its ecological value.

Cory Speroff, PLA, ASLA, CBLP, Princeton Hydro Landscape Architect and lead designer for the project, recently revisited the preserve and documented its progress through photos and video. As he walked along the ADA-accessible trails, birds and pollinators moved throughout the native vegetation framing the pathway. He observed a thriving landscape that’s providing important habitat and connecting visitors with the natural world.
