Princeton Hydro recently joined coastal and climate resilience practitioners from across the region at the 2026 New Jersey Coastal & Climate Resilience Conference, hosted by the New Jersey Coastal Resilience Collaborative (NJCRC) and the New Jersey Department of Environment Projection (NJDEP). With this year’s theme, “Navigating Changing Tides,” the three-day conference brought together hundreds of professionals to share ideas, explore solutions, and strengthen the partnerships essential to advancing coastal resilience.

Sunrise Bird Walk

As part of the conference program, Princeton Hydro's Director of Marketing & Communications Dana Patterson Grear organized a Sunrise Bird Walk at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, led by Mike McGraw, CSE, QAWB, ACE, Senior Wildlife Biologist at Princeton Hydro, alongside Drew McQuade and Aleshanee Mooney of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA).

A group of 25+ participants traveled the eight‑mile loop along Wildlife Drive, collectively observing 62 bird species along the way. Highlights included two White Ibis, an Osprey perched on a nesting platform, and hundreds of Snow Geese. As the group approached the end of the loop, a Peregrine Falcon provided the perfect send-off, holding its perch on a refuge sign while the caravan rolled by.

Perspectives on New Jersey’s Changing Coast

Dr. Clay Emerson, PE, CFM, Senior Technical Director of Engineering Services, shared his perspective on New Jersey’s changing coastal environment and the role bay island restoration can play in protecting vulnerable shorelines.

Clay’s presentation explored how coastal dynamics, restoration design, and resilience planning intersect, offering practical insight into nature‑based strategies that support shoreline stability and long‑term adaptability. His ability to translate complex processes into clear, engaging concepts resonated strongly with the conference audience. Moderated by Tom Herrington of the Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute, Clay participated in a Q&A panel discussion with NOAA Coastal Resilience Fellow Heather Korzun and Research Scientist Dr. John Swartz of The Water Institute to conclude the "Building Community Resilience" breakout session.

Addressing Harmful Algal Blooms in Coastal Systems

Dr. Fred Lubnow, Senior Technical Director of Ecological Services, gave a poster presentation focused on Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in coastal environments.

Fred’s work examined how HABs behave in dynamic coastal systems, how to identify HABs, and restoration strategies. In the context of the conference theme, his presentation reinforced that HABs are not just seasonal nuisances, but long‑term resilience challenges that require integrated science, monitoring, and restoration approaches.


Tools for Public Engagement & Storytelling

As part of the conference's Tools Café, Dana Patterson Grear, Director of Marketing & Communications, led a digital storytelling demonstration, titled “Launching an Interactive ArcGIS StoryMap for Public Outreach.” The session demonstrated how digital tools like StoryMaps can be used to translate complex data into accessible narratives that support community engagement, education, and informed decision‑making. Dana guided participants through several ArcGIS StoryMaps created by Princeton Hydro for clients and project partners, showcasing applications ranging from restoration projects and environmental resource inventories to water quality assessments and community science initiatives.

Creating Space for Connection

Princeton Hydro was proud to host a conference networking event alongside co‑sponsors Stantec, Baird, and Barnegat Oyster Collective. The gathering created space for conversation, collaboration, and relationship‑building, an essential part of advancing coastal resiliency initiatives and cross‑disciplinary problem‑solving. Attendees enjoyed brief remarks from each of the event sponsors, along with happy‑hour refreshments, and a complimentary oyster bar provided by the Barnegat Oyster Collective. Our team had a great time connecting with colleagues and celebrating the collaborative energy that defined the conference.

Field Trip to South Cape May Meadows

Another highlight of the conference for our team was a field trip to The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey’s South Cape May Meadows, where participants explored the newly completed boardwalk, a Princeton Hydro-designed project that creates a half‑mile, universally accessible route through one of the region’s most ecologically significant landscapes. Commissioned by The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey and installed by Renova Environmental Company, the project was designed to provide inclusive public access and opportunities for environmental education while carefully protecting a fragile ecosystem that serves as a vital stopover along the Atlantic Flyway.

Designing a public trail within such a dynamic wetland system required a careful balance between human experience and habitat preservation, with the goal of creating an inviting, educational, and fully accessible route without disturbing critical hydrology, soils, or wildlife. Walking the boardwalk alongside fellow NJCRC Conference participants was a meaningful, full-circle moment for our team, bringing the project’s vision to life.

Dr. Fred Lubnow, Princeton Hydro's Senior Technical Director of Ecological Services, and Jenn Rogers, Executive Director of Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS), were recently featured on the Native Plants, Healthy Planet podcast to discuss the collaborative, first‑of‑its‑kind initiative to monitor Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Delaware River Watershed using drones, spatial analysis, and community science.

The Delaware River is a lifeline for more than 14 million people, a refuge for wildlife, and a defining natural feature of the region. In recent years, HABs, once confined mostly to lakes and ponds, have expanded into streams and rivers and appearing in colder months. Understanding why this shift is happening, and how to predict it, is essential for protecting water quality, public health, and ecological resilience within the Delaware River watershed and watersheds nationwide.

Stewardship and Community Leadership from FoHVOS

Jenn Rogers, Executive Director of FoHVOS, brings two decades of conservation leadership to the partnership. Her background spans naturalist education, ecological stewardship, and the development of large-scale restoration and public engagement programs. During her fourteen years with the Mercer County Park Commission, she helped establish both the Environmental Education and Stewardship Departments and oversaw the care of more than ten thousand acres of parkland.

Jenn has spent her career building programs that connect people to the landscapes around them. Her commitment to community-driven conservation make her a key partner in a project that relies on both scientific rigor and public participation. Her perspective highlights how land use, watershed health, and community stewardship are deeply interconnected.

Expertise Shaping the Future of HAB Research

Dr. Fred Lubnow serves as Princeton Hydro’s Senior Technical Director of Ecological Services and brings more than 30 years of experience in limnology, watershed restoration, and community and ecosystem ecology. His career has focused on understanding how freshwater systems respond to nutrient loading, hydrologic change, and long-term environmental pressures. He has designed and led numerous lake and watershed restoration projects, developed USEPA Nine-Element and TMDL-driven watershed plans, and created field-based cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin monitoring programs that are now used across the region.

Fred’s expertise in the taxonomy, ecology, and management of algae, particularly cyanobacteria, has made him a leading voice in the study of HABs. He currently serves on New Jersey’s HABs Advisory Team, where he helps interpret water quality data and advises on mitigation strategies. His scientific leadership guides the technical design and implementation of the Delaware River HAB monitoring initiative.


A Collaborative Approach to Understanding HABs

Now entering its second year, the Delaware River HAB monitoring initiative is expanding both its scientific scope and its community engagement efforts. Building on the foundation established in 2025, the project team is conducting multi‑season drone flights, enhanced satellite‑based surveys, and targeted on‑the‑water sampling along 73 miles of the Delaware River and 24 connected waterbodies. These efforts are designed to strengthen the project’s ability to detect and forecast HABs under a wide range of seasonal and environmental conditions.

Year two also introduces several tools and activities intended to support broader participation and more efficient data collection. This includes the launch of a new ArcSurvey123 mobile data platform to support real‑time volunteer water quality submissions, as well as expanded training opportunities for community members interested in assisting with field sampling. Data collected through these efforts will contribute to the development of advanced algorithms capable of forecasting HAB occurrence at multiple spatial scales.

Funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's (NFWF) Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund (DWCF), in partnership with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the project continues to be supported by a diverse network of partners across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including The City University of New York's (CUNY) New York City College of Technology (City Tech), Trenton Water Works, Mercer County Park Commission, The College of New Jersey, Aqua-PA, Philadelphia Water Department, Bucks County Conservation District, Turner Designs, and US Army Corps of Engineers - Philadelphia District's Blue Marsh Lake. Together, these organizations contribute technical expertise, watershed knowledge, and crucial on‑the‑ground support. This collaborative approach remains central to the initiative’s success and long‑term objective: establishing a scalable HAB‑forecasting framework that can ultimately be applied to additional watersheds across the United States.

Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS), in partnership with Princeton Hydro, has launched a groundbreaking initiative, “Monitoring Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Delaware River Watershed Using Drones and Spatial Analysis,” to improve understanding and forecasting of HABs throughout the Delaware River Watershed. Funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), in partnership with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, through the Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund (DWCF), the project leverages drone technology and advanced data modeling to identify environmental conditions that contribute to HAB formation and aims to develop tools and methodologies for early detection and management.

For this innovative research project, FoHVOS, a 501(c)3 and accredited Land Trust located in Hopewell Township, NJ, has teamed with Princeton Hydro. Princeton Hydro conceptualized and designed the initiative and is leading the technical implementation, including field survey design, drone operations, data analysis, and volunteer training.

“The Delaware River is central to Hopewell Valley’s identity. It shapes our way of life, supplies drinking water to 14.2 million people, shelters wildlife like the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, and offers abundant outdoor recreation,” said Jennifer Rogers, Executive Director of FoHVOS. “HABs were once confined to ponds and lakes, but since 2018, they’ve appeared in colder months and spread to streams and rivers. Though land trusts traditionally focus on land, HABs show how land use directly affects water. These blooms often stem from excess nitrogen and phosphorus washed into waterways during storms. Protecting water means restoring land. Our partnership with Princeton Hydro aligns perfectly with our mission. Together, we’re working to better understand and safeguard the Delaware River and its tributaries in both NJ and PA.”

HABs, caused by nuisance growth of cyanobacteria, can have detrimental effects on water quality and are a growing environmental concern nationwide. These blooms deplete oxygen levels, release toxins, and disrupt ecosystems, potentially posing serious risks to drinking water supplies and the health of wildlife, pets, humans, and local economies. Despite advances in environmental monitoring, predicting when and where HABs will occur remains a challenge due to the complex interplay of nutrient loading, temperature, and hydrologic conditions that can lead to rapid bloom proliferation.

To address these challenges, this newly launched initiative integrates drone-based remote sensing, field sampling, and spatial data analysis to collect and interpret detailed environmental data over a two-year period. The study spans multiple monitoring sites along a 73-mile stretch of the Delaware River in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, focusing on near-shore sections and 23 associated waterbodies. The first survey event began in August 2025.

 

Drones equipped with multispectral imaging systems capture high-resolution spatial data that is then integrated with digital platforms to link remote-sensing with the drone data and on-the-water collected data. The field-based water quality measurements are being collected by a team of trained community volunteers who are using phycocyanin fluorometer meters to measure concentrations of the photosynthetic pigment phycocyanin, which is produced primarily by cyanobacteria. Volunteers enter the data into a customized ArcGIS mobile-friendly survey. These combined datasets will be used to develop and validate predictive algorithms for both planktonic and benthic HABs under varying seasonal and hydrologic conditions.

“This research project represents a major step forward in how we study and manage harmful algal blooms at the watershed scale,” said Dr. Fred Lubnow, Project Lead and Senior Technical Director of Ecological Services at Princeton Hydro. “By integrating satellite data, drone imagery, and on-the-water sampling, we’re developing predictive tools that will enable us take a proactive approach to mitigate HABs, improve response time, and better support our ecosystem health.”

Project partners include New York City College of Technology – The City University of New York, which donated the drone and is supporting remote sensing and data integration; Trenton Water Works, Mercer County Park Commission, and The College of New Jersey which are providing monitoring sites and contributing volunteers for water quality data collection in New Jersey; Aqua-PA and the Philadelphia Water Department, which are providing monitoring sites and volunteers to collect watershed data in Pennsylvania; the Bucks County Conservation District, which is coordinating volunteer data collection; and Turner Designs, whose advanced phycocyanin sensors are being used to calibrate and validate drone-based monitoring data.

This $1M project is funded through a $488,400 NFWF DWCF grant as part of the NFWF’s Research, Monitoring, & Evaluation Grant category and $513,700 in matching funds from project partners. This grant category aims to support high-performing science that is inclusive, adaptive, and innovative, with the potential to transform the Delaware River Watershed’s future through improved conservation, restoration, and public engagement.

Once complete, the project will produce a comprehensive report summarizing methods, analyses, and data-driven recommendations for practical, low-cost HAB monitoring and mitigation strategies that can be replicated across the Delaware River Watershed and beyond. Crucially, the report will identify tributaries and sources contributing to riverine HABs, enabling targeted restoration of the most affected lands and waters. Data collection will continue through Fall 2025, resume in Spring/Summer 2026, and culminate in a final report expected in 2027.

January 6 - 8: Northeast Aquatic Plant Management Society (NEAPMS) Annual Meeting

NEAPMS will host its 27th Annual Meeting at the Mystic Marriott Hotel and Spa in Groton, Connecticut. The conference opens with a Tuesday afternoon workshop followed by an evening welcome reception. Wednesday features a full day of technical presentations focused on the active management of aquatic plants and algae, along with a poster session and evening banquet. The event concludes on Thursday with additional technical talks in the morning and a luncheon ending at 1:00 p.m.

As part of the Invasive Aquatic Plant Management section of the conference program, Princeton Hydro Aquatic Ecologist Jesse Smith is leading a workshop on “Exploring Observations and Results of Nine Years of Brittle Naiad (Najas minor) Management in Sleepy Hollow Lake, New York.” Brittle naiad (Najas minor) is an invasive macrophyte found in the Northeast that has received little attention in the literature in regards to control and management, despite its widespread presence within its invasive range. The plant is a priority target species for management efforts in Sleepy Hollow Lake, NY due to its nuisance growth throughout the waterbody and impacts on recreation. Jesse’s presentation will explore management strategies and methods of measuring long-term management success.

January 21: “Roots So Deep” Film Screening and Panel Discussion

A special screening of Roots So Deep will take place at the Newtown Theatre at 7:00 p.m. The four-part documentary series follows inventive farmers and pioneering scientists who are charting a path to addressing climate change through hooves, heart, and soil. This event will feature parts one and four and is co-hosted with Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve. The film investigates a central question: can a little-used grazing approach that mimics historic bison movement help lift farmers out of debt, restore depleted soils, rebuild wildlife habitat, and draw down significant amounts of carbon?

The documentary features Princeton Hydro’s Senior Wildlife Biologist, Mike McGraw, CSE, QAWB, and ACE. He is part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists whose research forms the basis of the documentary. Mike’s studies have focused on observing the dynamics of breeding bird populations in paddocks using adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing and those continuously grazed. The documentary highlights that when managed effectively, farmland can boost productivity and profitability for farmers while simultaneously contributing positively to the environment and the diverse wildlife that shares the planet with humans.

Following the screening, a panel of experts from Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, Princeton Hydro, and the Native Plants Healthy Planet Podcast will discuss the film and answer audience questions.

January 26 - 27: Lake Champlain Research Conference 2026

Lake Champlain Sea Grant, in partnership with the University of Vermont’s Water Resources Institute, the Lake Champlain Basin Program/NEIWPCC, and the Lake Champlain Research Consortium, will host the Lake Champlain Research Conference at the University of Vermont’s Davis Center in Burlington, VT. This year’s theme, "Research to Action," will feature representation and research from New York, Vermont, Québec, and beyond, providing an opportunity for discussion, networking, and collaboration across Lake Champlain’s multi-jurisdictional watershed. March 4 & 5: Delaware Wetlands Conference

The Lake Hopatcong Commission, in partnership with Roxbury Township and Princeton Hydro, and with support from the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, has been awarded a $367,000 Water Quality Restoration Grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) for the Lake Hopatcong Watershed Basin Enhancement Project.

The project will retrofit an existing stormwater detention basin with a series of green stormwater infrastructure improvements designed to slow, capture, and naturally treat stormwater runoff. The basin project, located between King Road and Mount Arlington Boulevard in Roxbury Township, was identified in the 2021 Upper Musconetcong River Implementation Plan (WIP) as a priority project to reduce non-point source pollution and improve water quality before stormwater enters the lake at King Cove.

"Roxbury is truly thankful for the Lake Hopatcong Commission. Lake Hopatcong is such a valuable resource and the commission’s work alongside Princeton Hydro has preserved a natural treasure," said Shawn Potillo, Mayor of Roxbury. "We are grateful to the NJDEP for their support and award of this grant. This water basin project in Roxbury will help continue the commission’s purpose of keeping the lake a beautiful place to swim, boat, relax, and call home."

A range of improvements will be incorporated including planting native vegetation and managing invasive species to stabilize soils, support wildlife, and naturally filter pollutants before they reach the lake. Erosion and sediment control measures will further protect the area by reducing stormwater scouring and preventing bank degradation.

In addition to on-the-ground restoration, the project emphasizes public education and outreach to promote best management practices and ongoing watershed stewardship among residents and local partners. Project success will be evaluated through water quality monitoring conducted before and after construction, providing measurable data on the project’s effectiveness in improving water quality.

“Lake Hopatcong’s fight against harmful algal blooms requires a united front, where many projects, like retrofitting stormwater basins to capture nutrients before they go into the lake, collectively make a big impact,” said Dr. Fred Lubnow, Senior Technical Director of Ecological Services at Princeton Hydro. “Thanks to the leadership of the Lake Hopatcong Commission and the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, this collaborative approach is driving real progress toward cleaner water, healthier ecosystems, and a more resilient future for New Jersey’s largest lake.”

The basin enhancement project is funded through NJDEP’s Water Quality Restoration Grant Program, which is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under Clean Water Act Section 319(h). Along with the state grant, the project includes a $200,000 local match from the Commission, Roxbury Township, and the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, and builds on a $98,000 planning grant awarded by the New Jersey Highlands Council in 2024 that helped prepare the project for implementation and future grant opportunities.

“This project represents an important step forward in improving Lake Hopatcong’s water quality and reducing pollutants that contribute to harmful algal blooms,” said Ron Smith, Chairman of the Lake Hopatcong Commission. “We’re grateful to NJDEP, Roxbury Township, Princeton Hydro, the Foundation and the Highlands Council for their continued partnership in protecting this vital resource.”

Earlier this month, lake advocates, environmental professionals, researchers, and community leaders gathered for the 42nd Annual New York State Federation of Lake Associations (NYSFOLA) Conference. Held at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center, overlooking beautiful Lake George, the event brought together individuals from across the region to reexamine longstanding lake and watershed challenges through the lens of innovation, collaboration, and science.

With this year’s theme, “Back to the Future: Old Lake Issues and New Solutions,” the conference emphasized how new policies, technologies, and strategies can be applied to address persistent water quality issues. The two-day program featured a robust lineup of educational sessions, workshops, an exhibitor hall, and networking opportunities, all designed to inspire fresh ideas and collective action.

The conference kicked-off with a keynote from Greg Michel, Executive Director of Onondaga Earth Corps, a youth and community development organization headquartered in Syracuse, New York that engages young adults in environmental service projects. Michel and his team inspired attendees with stories of empowering the next generation of conservationists while tackling real-world ecological needs.

Understanding National Lake Trends and Funding Opportunities

Chris L. Mikolajczyk, CLM, Senior Manager of Aquatics shared insights from the most recent EPA’s National Lakes Assessment (NLA), which offers a statistically valid snapshot of lake health across the US. Using data from the NLA’s recurring five-year surveys, he illustrated how the findings help identify ecological conditions, long-term trends, and stressors impacting our lakes.

While the Clean Lakes Program (Section 314 of the Clean Water Act) once provided federal funding for in-lake restoration, it hasn’t been funded since 1995. Chris emphasized how large-scale assessments like the NLA can still play a crucial role in shaping effective lake management strategies and strengthening funding proposals. He spotlighted current funding opportunities from the New Jersey Highlands Council, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Research and Development Center. Through real-world case studies, he illustrated how data-driven planning can translate into on-the-ground results for lake restoration and protection.

Tackling Internal Loading with Updated Tools and Techniques

Dr. Fred Lubnow, Senior Technical Director of Ecological Services, tackled internal phosphorus loading—a growing concern for lakes already struggling with nutrient enrichment and harmful algal blooms (HABs). Unlike external sources of pollution, internal loading arises from within the lake itself, particularly in sediment layers that continue to release nutrients long after the original source has been addressed.

Fred provided detailed case studies from lakes across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, including Lake Mohawk and Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey, Harveys Lake in Pennsylvania, and Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. He demonstrated how targeted in-lake and watershed strategies, when backed by proper assessment and data, can successfully reduce internal phosphorus levels and improve long-term lake health.

On April 9, experts and stakeholders from across the country gathered virtually for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (NJDEP) 6th Annual Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Summit. Held via Microsoft Teams and free to attend, this year’s summit embraced the theme “Kicking the HAB-it Together: Collaborating to Get Ahead of HABs”—a fitting reflection of the event’s focus on moving away from crisis-driven responses and toward proactive, long-term solutions for managing HABs.

The summit brought together a diverse audience of local, state, and federal government representatives, environmental commissions, watershed associations, nonprofits, academic researchers, lake management professionals, and community members united by a shared goal: to better understand, prevent, and manage the impacts of HABs. With presentations spanning public health, policy, science, and on-the-ground solutions, the program set the stage for a day of insightful discussion and knowledge-sharing.

The day kicked off with opening remarks and presentations from NJDEP representatives and the Montgomery Township Health Department, who provided updates on state-level HAB response efforts and local public health perspectives. The morning session also featured a technical keynote address from Dr. Wayne Carmichael, Professor Emeritus at Wright State University and a nationally recognized pioneer in HAB research. Dr. Carmichael offered a comprehensive national overview of the current HAB landscape, emerging threats, and the evolving science behind bloom detection, health risk assessment, and mitigation strategies. His presentation underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in tackling this growing environmental challenge.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to collaboration and preparedness. A panel discussion titled “Getting Ahead of the Crisis: Prevention vs. Response” included a range of voices, including NJDEP leadership, municipal representatives, and advocacy groups like The Watershed Institute. Panelists discussed how coordinated efforts, regulatory tools, and community engagement can help prevent the conditions that lead to HABs, rather than merely responding after blooms occur.

The final portion of the summit highlighted innovative management strategies. Presentations covered topics like choosing practical solutions for HABs and restoration case studies. Princeton Hydro’s own Pat Rose, Aquatics Project Manager and Environmental Scientist, was among the expert speakers. Pat presented on a cutting-edge research and development initiative funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). His talk explored both proactive and reactive treatment strategies designed to control near-shore HABs at Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest lake, in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.

More Resources & How to Stay Informed

HABs are rapid, large overgrowths of cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, aren’t actually algae, they are prokaryotes, single-celled aquatic organisms that are closely related to bacteria and can photosynthesize like algae. These microorganisms are a natural part of aquatic ecosystems, but, under the right conditions (e.g., heavy rains followed by hot, sunny days), these organisms can rapidly increase to form HABs. Climate change is leading to more frequent, more intense rainstorms that drive run-off pollutants into waterways, coupled with more hot days that increase the water temperature, creating the ideal environment for HABs to proliferate.  In recent years, HABs have begun to appear in more places, earlier in the summer.

The New Jersey Governor’s HABs Initiative was launched in 2019 after lakes throughout NJ (and the entire Continental U.S.) suffered from HAB outbreaks, which caused local and county health agencies to close off all beaches and issue advisories. These unprecedented conditions had significant negative impacts on lake-related ecological, recreational, and economic resources. The Governor’s initiative designated $13 million in funding to local communities for HABs reduction/prevention; established the HABs expert team, which includes Princeton Hydro Senior Technical Director, Ecological Services Dr. Fred Lubnow; and coordinated annual HABs summits in order to encourage continued community education and discussion.

March 22: World Water Day

World Water Day, established by the United Nations in 1993, highlights the vital role of water in our world. This year’s theme, "Glacier Preservation," underscores the critical role of glaciers in sustaining life and the water cycle. To celebrate, The Watershed Institute is hosting a World Water Day event packed with interactive activities, including games, water-themed arts and crafts, a vernal pool exploration hike, and up-close encounters with aquatic critters. Participants will also discover ways to safeguard local waterways and help keep our water resources clean and healthy.

March 25: Save the Environment of Moorestown Annual Meeting

Save the Environment of Moorestown (STEM) will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, March 25, at 7 p.m. at the Community House. The event will feature guest speaker Michael McGraw, CSE, QAWB, ACE, Senior Project Manager and Senior Wildlife Biologist in our Regulatory Compliance & Wildlife Surveys team, who will discuss the findings of a recent ecological study of Swede Run.

Mike, who has over 20 years of experience in ecological assessments and wildlife surveys, led the study, which focused on the section of Swede Run within the Swede Run Field Open Space. Funded by a 2024 New Jersey Audubon Grant, the study assessed ecological, geomorphic, and water-quality conditions. The findings will help STEM secure grant funding for future habitat restoration efforts, building on past work completed in collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the township. March 29: 2025 Watershed Congress

Presented by the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, the 2025 Watershed Congress takes place at Alvernia University in Reading, PA. The Watershed Congress has evolved since 1998 to advance the best available information and techniques for protecting and restoring watersheds. The focus on networking across disciplines means that the Watershed Congress melds science, policy, and practical applications into one program. As a result, the annual Watershed Congress is a highly anticipated event for people interested in understanding, protecting, and restoring their local streams. April 9: 6th Annual Harmful Algal Bloom Summit

We’re excited to share that the NJDEP’s 6th Annual Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Summit will take place virtually via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday, April 9. This year’s theme, “Kicking the HAB-bit Together: Collaborating to Get Ahead of HABs,” highlights the growing shift from reactive, crisis-based approaches to proactive, collaborative, and sustainable solutions for managing harmful algal blooms. The summit will feature a dynamic lineup of speakers addressing emerging trends and timely topics in the HAB field. Among the presenters is Princeton Hydro’s Aquatics Project Manager and Environmental Scientist, Patrick Rose, who will be speaking about an exciting new Research & Development initiative funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). His presentation will explore the evaluation of innovative treatment strategies—both proactive and reactive—aimed at cost-effectively controlling near-shore HABs.

April 12: Free Workshop - Learn How to Create a Rain Garden

Join the Lower Makefield Township Environmental Advisory Council for a free, open-to-the-public lecture on how to build a rain garden. As part of the Advisory Council’s Environmental Lecture Series, this 1-hour workshop, led by Princeton Hydro President Geoffrey M. Goll, PE, will explore the environmental benefits of rain gardens and provide practical tips on how to create one on your own property. The event will be held in Yardley, PA, at the LMT Administrative Building, 1100 Edgewood Road.

April 16: New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team Conference

Presented by the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space and hosted by Duke Farms, we are excited to participate in the 18th Annual New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team Conference. Considered the most comprehensive state-wide forum on invasive species, the conference encompasses insights from both academic research and field experience, and features practical demonstrations by land stewards in addition to formal presentations. Founded in 1983, NYSFOLA represents over 200 lake associations across New York. The Watershed Institute's 8th Annual New Jersey Watershed Conference

February 11 - 12: Delaware Estuary Science and Environmental Summit

The 2025 Delaware Estuary Science & Environmental Summit, held at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington, DE, is themed "Bridging the Gap Between Science, Policy, and Action." The goal of this biennial Summit is to bring together scientists, managers, restoration practitioners, and educators from different sectors to share the latest scientific information, network, and make ecological linkages that promote a better understanding of the watershed as a whole. Join us as we celebrate the top 10 successes that made this year extraordinary:

1. Restored Free-Flowing Rivers in the Delaware River Watershed

This year marked major milestones in the restoration of three Delaware River tributaries. The removal of the 129-year-old Paulina Lake Dam on the Paulins Kill River reconnected an additional 7.6 miles of river habitat, adding to the 10 miles restored following the removal of Columbia Lake Dam. This project, led by The Nature Conservancy and designed by Princeton Hydro, represents a significant step forward in revitalizing New Jersey’s third-largest tributary to the Delaware River. The removal of Dam #2 on Bushkill Creek completed a five-dam removal effort, making the lower Bushkill Creek free-flowing and reconnecting it to the Delaware River for the first time in over 200 years. This effort enhances water quality, supports the passage of migratory fish, and bolsters freshwater mussel populations, vital to the health of the watershed. In November, work began to remove the Cedar Grove Dam, the first of four dams slated for removal along the Pequest River over the next year. This collaborative effort, led by The Nature Conservancy with training support from Princeton Hydro, will open nearly 10 miles of mainstem river and reconnect 57 miles of tributaries. Collectively, these dam removals celebrate a shared commitment to restoring ecological balance, reconnecting critical habitats, and supporting the biodiversity of the Delaware River Basin.


2. Designed & Implemented Urban Ecological Uplift Initiatives

Through engineering and ecological enhancements, we are revitalizing landscapes across the region. In New Jersey, the 279-acre Miry Run Dam Site 21 in Mercer County Park is being transformed into a vibrant public park that balances nature and community. We also collaborated with the Trenton South Ward Neighborhood Association on a Community Garden and Park Visioning project, assisting them in securing a grant that led to the planting of 500 native plants, enhancing public spaces and creating critical habitat for monarch butterflies. In Pennsylvania, Warrington Township’s Lion’s Pride Park is being converted into a resilient wetland complex with accessible pathways, demonstrating how ecological uplift fosters healthier communities. And, construction is now complete on the Turkey Foot restoration project within the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum in Philadelphia. The project revitalized 7.5 acres of critical wetland and upland habitats, preserving Pennsylvania’s last freshwater tidal marsh and supporting migratory and threatened and endangered species. In New York, we broke ground on the Spring Creek (North) Ecosystem Restoration Project in Brooklyn and Queens, which aims to restore 43 acres of degraded habitat within Jamaica Bay into a mosaic of low marsh, high marsh, scrub shrub wetland, and maritime upland within a 67-acre footprint. Meanwhile, the addition of the Marsh Master® 2MX-KC-FH to Princeton Hydro’s fleet elevated the ability to combat invasive species like Phragmites australis with minimal ecological disturbance.


3. Earned 7 Prestigious Awards

Princeton Hydro was recognized as one of New Jersey’s “Top Workplaces of 2024,” a prestigious honor that highlights our commitment to fostering an inspiring and supportive work environment. Two of our project achievements received acclaim: the Musconetcong Island Park project earned both the New Jersey Future Smart Growth Award and the American Planning Association of New Jersey’s 2024 Great Places in New Jersey - Great Public Space Award for transforming an abandoned site into a riparian park. The City of Lambertville’s stormwater management initiatives received the NJDEP “Our Water’s Worth It” Award for advancing flood resilience and water quality. Additionally, the restoration of the historic Roebling Wireworks, home to our Trenton headquarters, earned the New Jersey Historic Preservation Project Award, and our President, Geoffrey Goll, PE, was honored with the “Catalyst for Sustainable Change” Award from Hold High the Torch for advancing STEAM education and environmental stewardship. And just this month, Dr. Fred Lubnow was honored with the NJ-AWRA Peter Homack Award for his outstanding contributions to the multi-disciplinary understanding and management of New Jersey’s water resources. These awards reflect the passion, innovation, and commitment to excellence that define Princeton Hydro.


4. Enhanced Accessibility & Transformed Trails at a Vital Nature Preserve

We partnered with The Nature Conservancy to enhance accessibility and visitor experience at the South Cape May Meadows Preserve, a 200-acre haven of biodiversity that welcomes 90,000 visitors annually. The centerpiece of this collaboration is a new 2,675-foot elevated boardwalk and 480-square-foot viewing platform, designed to open access to previously unreachable areas and go beyond ADA standards to ensure visitors of all abilities can explore the preserve’s diverse landscape. Situated largely within freshwater wetlands, the project required innovative solutions to minimize impact on sensitive habitats. This effort highlights the importance of creating inclusive spaces that both protect and celebrate our natural world.


5. Secured $1 Million in Grants for our Clients

One of Princeton Hydro’s core offerings is grant writing for our nonprofit and government clients. This year alone, we landed nearly $1 million in grants for our clients for harmful algal bloom monitoring, habitat enhancement, water quality improvements, and planting native plants via the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund and the Xerces Mid-Atlantic Pollinator Habitat Kit Planting Program.


6. Celebrated Numerous Staff Achievements:

 

This year, our talented team reached numerous applaud-worthy milestones, showcasing their dedication to advancing environmental science and sustainability. Amy McNamara became a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), highlighting her expertise in sustainable site design and regulatory compliance. Marissa Ciocco earned a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Connecticut, building on her existing licensure in Delaware. Chris Mikolajczyk CLM was appointed President-Elect of the Colorado Lake and Reservoir Management Association Board. Jesse Smith organized and implemented Flemington’s first-ever BioBlitz, a community-focused event that fostered a deeper connection to local biodiversity. Erin Bennett became a Notary Public in New Jersey and earned her Green Infrastructure Champions certification. Thomas Hopper achieved the Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP®) certification, further elevating his contributions to geospatial analysis and restoration efforts. And, Matt Kreines earned his FAA Commercial Drone Pilot license.


7. Completed First Project in Colorado:

We completed our first project in Colorado—a bathymetric assessment of the Fairplay Beach Reservoir, focused on mapping the reservoir’s underwater landscape to support ongoing conservation efforts. We are excited to bring our expertise in water resource management to new regions like Colorado and look forward to future opportunities to contribute to the preservation and enhancement of Colorado’s unique high-altitude aquatic environments. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to explore new waters and chart new territories.


8. Used Innovative & Integrated Strategies to Safeguard Water Quality:

We made significant strides in advancing lake and watershed health through innovative initiatives. At Virginia’s Smith Mountain Lake, decades of historical data and cutting-edge research were leveraged to identify the drivers of harmful algal blooms and shape sustainable solutions. In New Jersey, a collaboration with the Mercer County Park Commission resulted in comprehensive lake and watershed management plans to address algal blooms and bolster ecological resilience across the park’s aquatic ecosystems. These projects highlight our unwavering commitment to protecting vital freshwater resources and fostering healthier ecosystems for future generations.


9. Welcomed 5 New Team Members & 4 Interns:

This year we welcomed Senior Wildlife Biologist Michael McGraw, CSE, QAWB, ACE, who joined our Regulatory Compliance & Wildlife Surveys team, bringing over 20 years of expertise in ecological assessments and wildlife surveys. Alexandra Garnett became a vital part of our Trenton office as an Administrative Assistant. Civil Engineer Ryan Krueger, PE, joined our Engineering Services team this month, and Eric Libis returned to our team as an Aquatics Specialist over the summer/fall. Kaitlyn Jones, who began as an intern, has now joined our Aquatics team permanently as a Staff Scientist! This summer, we also hosted four interns: Francisco Batz (Landscape Architecture), Jade Gallagher (Communications), Daniel Goll (Engineering), and Rachel Trokenheim (Aquatics).


10. Participated in 50+ Conferences, Workshops, Community Gatherings and Sponsored 30+ Events:

We connected with industry professionals, communities, and stakeholders through a wide array of events, fostering collaboration, sustainability, and stewardship. In partnership with The Watershed Institute, we delivered impactful workshops, including the inaugural “Watershed Restoration Academy: Healthy Streams 101;” webinar sessions on daylighting streams and the conservation of American shad; and two education sessions at the 7th Annual Watershed Institute Conference. President Geoffrey Goll, PE traveled globally to participate in important river restoration and dam removal conversations, including the “Free Flow 2024 Conference” in The Netherlands, a river connectivity workshop in South Africa, and collaborations with Associação Natureza Portugal, a Portuguese non-profit NGO that works in association with World Wide Fund for Nature in Portugal. We also sponsored and presented at nationally prominent events, including the “NALMS International Symposium” in Lake Tahoe, CA; the “NYSFOLA Conference” in Lake George, NY; the “Harmful Algal Bloom Summit” in Portland, ME; and the “Delaware River Watershed Forum” in Bethlehem, PA, covering topics such as climate change impacts on lake ecology and green infrastructure stormwater management. Locally, we celebrated community and stewardship through events like the “Trenton River Days Fair,” Mercer County’s “Juneteenth Celebration,” and the New Jersey Highlands Council’s 20th anniversary, which highlighted collaborative Lake Hopatcong project successes. We also led two Facebook Live events: “Understanding and Managing Invasive Species in Your Backyard” and “Debunking Myths About Bats, Spiders & Snakes.” Through these efforts we deepened relationships with partners, advanced critical conversations, and inspired meaningful, sustainable change. These are just a few highlights from a truly impactful year!

Princeton Hydro recently joined coastal and climate resilience practitioners from across the region at the 2026 New Jersey Coastal & Climate Resilience Conference, hosted by the New Jersey Coastal Resilience Collaborative (NJCRC) and the New Jersey Department of Environment Projection (NJDEP). With this year’s theme, “Navigating Changing Tides,” the three-day conference brought together hundreds of professionals to share ideas, explore solutions, and strengthen the partnerships essential to advancing coastal resilience.

Sunrise Bird Walk

As part of the conference program, Princeton Hydro's Director of Marketing & Communications Dana Patterson Grear organized a Sunrise Bird Walk at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, led by Mike McGraw, CSE, QAWB, ACE, Senior Wildlife Biologist at Princeton Hydro, alongside Drew McQuade and Aleshanee Mooney of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA).

A group of 25+ participants traveled the eight‑mile loop along Wildlife Drive, collectively observing 62 bird species along the way. Highlights included two White Ibis, an Osprey perched on a nesting platform, and hundreds of Snow Geese. As the group approached the end of the loop, a Peregrine Falcon provided the perfect send-off, holding its perch on a refuge sign while the caravan rolled by.

Perspectives on New Jersey’s Changing Coast

Dr. Clay Emerson, PE, CFM, Senior Technical Director of Engineering Services, shared his perspective on New Jersey’s changing coastal environment and the role bay island restoration can play in protecting vulnerable shorelines.

Clay’s presentation explored how coastal dynamics, restoration design, and resilience planning intersect, offering practical insight into nature‑based strategies that support shoreline stability and long‑term adaptability. His ability to translate complex processes into clear, engaging concepts resonated strongly with the conference audience. Moderated by Tom Herrington of the Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute, Clay participated in a Q&A panel discussion with NOAA Coastal Resilience Fellow Heather Korzun and Research Scientist Dr. John Swartz of The Water Institute to conclude the "Building Community Resilience" breakout session.

Addressing Harmful Algal Blooms in Coastal Systems

Dr. Fred Lubnow, Senior Technical Director of Ecological Services, gave a poster presentation focused on Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in coastal environments.

Fred’s work examined how HABs behave in dynamic coastal systems, how to identify HABs, and restoration strategies. In the context of the conference theme, his presentation reinforced that HABs are not just seasonal nuisances, but long‑term resilience challenges that require integrated science, monitoring, and restoration approaches.


Tools for Public Engagement & Storytelling

As part of the conference's Tools Café, Dana Patterson Grear, Director of Marketing & Communications, led a digital storytelling demonstration, titled “Launching an Interactive ArcGIS StoryMap for Public Outreach.” The session demonstrated how digital tools like StoryMaps can be used to translate complex data into accessible narratives that support community engagement, education, and informed decision‑making. Dana guided participants through several ArcGIS StoryMaps created by Princeton Hydro for clients and project partners, showcasing applications ranging from restoration projects and environmental resource inventories to water quality assessments and community science initiatives.

Creating Space for Connection

Princeton Hydro was proud to host a conference networking event alongside co‑sponsors Stantec, Baird, and Barnegat Oyster Collective. The gathering created space for conversation, collaboration, and relationship‑building, an essential part of advancing coastal resiliency initiatives and cross‑disciplinary problem‑solving. Attendees enjoyed brief remarks from each of the event sponsors, along with happy‑hour refreshments, and a complimentary oyster bar provided by the Barnegat Oyster Collective. Our team had a great time connecting with colleagues and celebrating the collaborative energy that defined the conference.

Field Trip to South Cape May Meadows

Another highlight of the conference for our team was a field trip to The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey’s South Cape May Meadows, where participants explored the newly completed boardwalk, a Princeton Hydro-designed project that creates a half‑mile, universally accessible route through one of the region’s most ecologically significant landscapes. Commissioned by The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey and installed by Renova Environmental Company, the project was designed to provide inclusive public access and opportunities for environmental education while carefully protecting a fragile ecosystem that serves as a vital stopover along the Atlantic Flyway.

Designing a public trail within such a dynamic wetland system required a careful balance between human experience and habitat preservation, with the goal of creating an inviting, educational, and fully accessible route without disturbing critical hydrology, soils, or wildlife. Walking the boardwalk alongside fellow NJCRC Conference participants was a meaningful, full-circle moment for our team, bringing the project’s vision to life.
